Why We Write – And the place of established games journalism styles

Best enjoyed with a chirpy yet slightly sarcastic Midlands English accent.
I’ll admit that the thought of niche writings’ place in the world had never really struck me as a minor force until a couple of days ago, when my ideas and thoughts in this area of games journalism were critiqued by who I’m starting to believe was the editor of a high profile gaming magazine. Now I’m a gamer, however Continue reading

In Retro Retrospect of Borderlands, Some kind of half arsed journal

I know it might sound as if I’ve beaten this horse as much as I have stalker here, but I think I’d like to add a few comments with a severely less hype-minded approach here.

At the moment, I’m around the midpoint of Borderlands and it’s starting to show its blemishes. The previous time I wrote about this game, I was fresh faced, bushy tailed and all that crazy bullshit, but after experiencing approximately around 20 hours with of gameplay, I’d like to share what I’ve experiences, with a maximum of 1 digression, what I’ve Continue reading

WHY GAME REVIEWS SUCK An exercise in hypocrisy

WHY GAME REVIEWS SUCK
An exercise in hypocrisy.

Everybody, everybody, roll on up for the hot new game everyone is talking about: Dragon Age: Origins! 8.5/10 GAMESPOT! 8.4/10 IGN! 8/10 EUROGAMER! Wow, these guys must be really unified in their opinions!

Hold on a second, that last one can’t be right…

If you click through to the Eurogamer review of Dragon Age, you’ll find 3 pages of seething disgust for the game and everything it stands for. Every aspect of the game is ripped apart, piece by piece, good points brought up only to emphasise the horrible ones. The game is called cliché, bland, and overdone, only succeeding in spite of itself. The storyline? An emotionless mess, designed by a committee in such a way as to Continue reading

When the Pixels Hit the Fan – What comes after graphics?

It’s an inevitability. Graphics have always been integral to the games industry because they allow the player to access the game in an inviting way, all the way up to the stage where they’ve become gratuitous eye candy. There is no doubting that people like graphics since there seems to be this latent part of the human mind that Continue reading

So, I actually bought Borderlands

In reflection of what I said a few days ago, I’m in conflict and agreement with my points. At this stage I’m on my third attempt at the game, this point is almost insignificant, but a small technical issue meant that I lost my save three times because I have a partitioned drive, to fix this, create a desktop shortcut, and in the shortcut tab, add -nohomedir after your target e.g.D:\Steam\steam.exe -applaunch 8980 -nohomedir. If you’re using steam, set launch options with the same thing, add -nohomedir in the launch options text box. Bureaucracy Over.

From what I previously wrote, I had serious doubts about borderlands, worrying that the story was going to be inadequate, and that it was going to be one big, long, boring grindfest interspersed with a wafer thin story and Continue reading

Borderlands, and the necessity of story?

I find myself stuck in this cycle of vacillating over whether or not to buy borderlands. The worst possible outcome is that I lose $50 on a game that holds my attention for as long as Super Smash Bros. Brawl (on the contrary I loved the original). It looks appealing and I must give my applause to the art department for creating and amazing hand-drawn-mock-cell-shaded visual extravaganza, but that only perpetuates my indecision even further because Continue reading

I apologize for the lack of updates…buuuut MODS

I’m planning two essays in the coming couple of weeks, one on Machinarium and the place of adventure games in today’s gaming community, and one “When the pixels hit the fan” about the direction of game design and hardware innovation when games reach their maximum graphical potential… scary stuff right? Anyway Continue reading

The Machination is now website-equipped

It’s been a long week slaving over a hot computer in the thick of the school term, but I’ve managed to find the time to do something I’ve intended to do for a long time, publish my own website. Obviously this is only the beginning since I hardly think one title page constitutes a website, so expect plenty of more dazzling content in the future including a page on our current project, Silhouette and much more.

Be astounded, Our website damnit

News on Machinarium

Machinarium
I’ve just started playing a charming little adventure game called Machinarium by Czech developer Amanita Design , and I intend to write up a collaborative review on this when a friend of mine and myself can make time to complete the game around our hectic playboy lifestyles.
Until then you can tide yourself over with the demo that can be downloaded off Amanita’s website, or off Steam.

Happy gaming
