So I’ve been thinking. I’ve gotten to the stage where I can’t really spare the time to write more than one feature a week but I sort of feel as if my blog is going slack in between, so I thought this needed some consideration. How often do the readers want updates, and when? I’ve been throwing the idea around that I could post something small every day, then write a feature on the weekend, but I don’t want to stretch my ideas too thin. DECISIONS, IDEAS, CATSTROPHE. So what do you guys think? Will ye’ be bold enough to front up and make a suggestion, or should I just fly down my own wild, unpredictably route?
Also, I’m thinking of starting a new blog some time where I post my ideas for games, steaming hot from my mind. Maybe I just want to relive that week where I locked myself away in my tower and did nothing but work on an MMO based on emergent gameplay (True story: this is ACTUALLY why I started the blog) .I consider it some kind of cerebral exercise, and maybe just a little narcissistic.
What appeals most to me about coming here is the well-thought-out feature articles on game design. So long as those stay, I would say just write whatever you can in between without overextending yourself and burning out. You may find, though, that the inspiration for a longer article strikes you at the most inopportune times, in which case you’d end up writing during the week anyway.
Of course, my experience with this site dates back all of about a week. So take these opinions with a grain of salt.
I agree with Veret. If it’s a news blog then having the quickest crude articles would help. However your blog is more about careful analysis, which means I’m happy to wait a little longer for well thought out articles.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I have, at a few points considered, and even written condensed versions of the feature article format and I never found myself satisfactorily communicating a point. So I think I’ll stick with the longer pieces. I guess at the time I was sort of obsessing over view counts to the blog, but I couldn’t really expect them to be massive in between writing something anyway.
View count tools can be a real double sided sword. It tells you how many people would click on the page, but it doesn’t tell you how many people would take your blog to heart or even read it.
Stick to what you are happy with the most. As readers, we are pretty happy to read what you have or we wouldn’t be here. 8)
True, true. I guess it’s something that all small-name internet writers encounter, the trouble of locating and keeping readers. But to be honest, I’d rather feel like part of a small, strong blogging community with mutual interests, then just “having lots of views”.
